Giles and James - What a Team
Published 19:52 on 9 Jun 2025
A few choice words from James who authored the following text and put Giles through his paces on his trusty steed from John OGroats to Lands End all in support of Cancer Research. Now Read On
Aunty Hilda completed 768 miles in 5 days, many in heavy rain, strong winds, some terrible road surfaces, steep hills and awful motorway conditions (as route planner and navigator I thought Giles would appreciate some variety). She performed beautifully, started easily and only lost a tank knee rubber (whilst on the trailer), a nut and bolt from the rear mudguard, a stop for the centre stand and the rescued air filter. The only real problem was the petrol tap closing itself off, easily fixed with a cable tie which had to be cut off and replaced every time we stopped. Aren't Rudges BRILLIANT!!!
The support Volvo V60d4 covered exactly 1800 miles in 7 days, did 51 mpg towing the trailer in warmth, comfort and largely Radio 4.
Giles and James visited 5 excellent pubs and 6 great B & B's and met some lovely people. We just about ran out of Car Cake (baked by Marilyn ), clean pants, Gaviscon, pills and cable ties.
You donated £3800 (including Gift Aid)....and there is more to come. The final amount raised will be announced at the TCYC Mid Summer Party 14 June.
Hilda will be displayed on the Lawn in Dawlish July 20th and a talk will be given sometime later in the year.
The prime object of the run was to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and have some fun, give you some entertainment and become End to Enders. Mission accomplished.
So if you have enjoyed it, and not yet donated, in the words of Bob......
