TCYC were well represented in the Torquay championships with three entries; Galene (a Soling), Juno (a J97), and Windchaser (a Benateau).

The soling crew in Galene (Roger Bufton, Julian W Brown, Chris and Nick Clarence) were overall winners of the Cruiser class and picked up the "Indian Trophy" and a magnum of champagne.

There was another Soling from Dartmouth in the same class and match sailing was really competitive; they had a much larger spinnaker and pole but a slightly smaller main than our TCYC boat. This produced a 'cat and mouse' game with Galene trying to gain a large lead on the upwind beats only to see the lead evaporate on the downwind spinnaker legs.

Saturday was a great day as Galene pulled off two 1st places: in the first race managing a 6 second lead and in the second race over a minute lead.

Sunday gave a 2nd place with the other Soling 20 seconds behind, a 1st with the other Soling 13 seconds behind and then a 2nd place with the other soling some 2 minutes ahead.

Monday started in blustery rain and the cat and mouse continued. In two races 2nd places were achieved as the other Soling was 14 seconds and then just over 4 minutes ahead of Galene. It was in this last race that the Spinnaker pole broke which ruined the performance of downwind spinnaker legs.

Overall, a great event with both short tactical courses and longer cruising courses. Notable incidents included a couple of general recalls for the IRC fleet and in blustery conditions on Saturday afternoon several broaches were observed.
