Successful Race Officer training course

Published 12:14 on 15 Jan 2024

In response to member requests the Club ran a very successful Race Officer Training morning last Sunday 14th Jan

12 would be race officers responded to the invitation and enthusiastically participated in 3 hours of modules designed to provide would be race officers all that they need to take on a duty or two going forward. Thank you for taking the time to attend.

Tea, coffee and doughnuts were on hand to warm and nourish folk on what was a very chilly morning.

We started with a session from James Stevenson held in the training room on how to set a course with the various different wind conditions that we get. He also covered logistics, mark positions and many other topics as well.

After this Ray Potter presented the lighting system used to start and finish races, and how to operate this, as well as the rationale, mark positions and race management.

Andy Colyer followed this with a session on safety on the water, covering issues associated with the safety boat, recovery of people and protocols for launching, recovery and preparation. Richard Bryant concluded this session with a slot on safeguarding.

Following a coffee and doughnut break we followed this with Ray doing a session on results, and John Ewbank doing a session on the Risk Assessment software tool. After this the training session was completed.

The sessions were lively with lots of questions and debate from those attending which was great. Thank you to all those that attended.

Finally a big thank you to all those that presented your time and your expertise is valued and hugely appreciated.

John
