Beginners Race Training on beautiful Summer's day

Today we started something new for TCYC. We've been great at laying on RYA Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 dinghy sailing courses but integrating those sailors into our race programme has been a challenge. So a few of us thought it would be a good idea to run a session that we called Introduction to Racing for Beginners. And what a great response we got with 13 wanting to do today's course and another session planned on Sunday August 21st.

The weather was idyllic today and we started with a check on boats and how they are rigged followed by an introduction to the starting sequence and lights that we use.

A short session about basic racing rules and then we hit the water with repetitive start practices. We condensed the start sequence down to 3 mins instead of the usual 5 and packed in starts one after the other. Getting all boats into the start box with 1 minute to go was a bit shambolic first time round but they all got the hang of it thereafter. So we rounded off with two short triangular course races and everyone came off the water smiling. Compliments there were aplenty with many wanting to do the next session and join in our September regatta (Sept 17&18).
