Tremendous end to the Icebreaker Series 2022

Published 20:15 on 27 Mar 2022

Thirteen boats launched on the final day of the Icebreaker Saturday Series. Unseasonable sunshine combined with a stiff Easterly breeze ensured that exciting sailing lay ahead. The brisk conditions made for entertaining viewing for the members watching from the new clubhouse with capsizes and gear breakages being all to common.

Race Officer Tim Martin set a beat towards Flow Point followed by a run to Archbrook and then two very fast reaches back to the start line.

The two gybe marks caused the inevitable capsizes.

Solo Fleet

Four Solos braved the conditions and started the first race with three completing the race. A broken kicking strap on Andy Colyer's Solo meant a retirement before race two. Only two Solos remained to start the second race and both Paul Bartlett and Malcolm Davies also took part in race three with each boat winning a race.

Overall series winner for the Solo fleet was Paul Bartlett with Malcom Davies in second place.

Handicap Fleet

The Handicap fleet consisted of four Lasers, three Finns and two K1s. With retirements after the first and second races there were five boats left for the final race.

Gary Phare led the way for all three races with Mike Commander in second place in race one in his K1 and Brian Tucker in second place in his Laser 4.7 for races two and three.

Overall series winner for the Handicap fleet was Gary Phare with Brian Tucker in second place

Thanks also to Paul Heather and James Main for manning the safety boat and to James Main for taking the photos.
