Sunday’s Teign Corinthian YC dinghy racing made up for a disappointing Saturday at Coombe Cellars. The very early high tide and the strong ebb did not leave enough time for the wind to fill in, so racing was cancelled.

Sunday started with light airs coming generally downriver, which gradually became a pleasant breeze for most of the time. The Firefly crew of Pete Cooke and Janet Exelby, who have migrated from Salcombe for the winter, set the pace and took first place in both the handicap class races. This puts them in a very strong position to win the Icebreaker series, as there can only be one discarded result due to the number of cancelled races.  Second in race one was the Fireball sailed by Christine and Graham Slater (Paignton SC) and third Malcolm and Fiona Davies (Paignton SC) in their Tasar. In the second race, team Davies moved up to the runner up slot with Jamie Stevenson and Jamie Oaten, from the Royal Torbay YC, third in their RS800.

The ten Solos saw Nick Whyte in fine form. He led from the start and saw off serious challenges from James Stevenson who finished second and Andy Colyer who ended third. Race two saw a different lead group, but it was the now familiar Stevenson who took control and a victory.  The runner up was Peter Hammond, another Salcombe sailor, who was followed home by Whyte.
Currently, Andy Colyer leads the Solo fleet overall, but he will have to watch out for Peter Hearne who is only three points behind with four races left in the series.

The racing continues on Saturday at 2 and Sunday at 2.30pm.
