Dinghy racing on Saturday was definitely not for the faint-hearted. In a steady force five blowing up river with gusts of up to 29 mph at Coombe Cellars it was only a few determined sailors that went afloat.
Such was the lack of enthusiasm that Teign Corinthian YC Race Officer, Alan Wilson, had to galvanise the competitors into action with a reminder of the start-time.
The eight starters, were led out by Paul Procter, from Paignton SC, who was obliged to bring his RS600 back ashore with gear failure before the start.
Other notable retirees included Chris Tilbrook who’s Vortex was virtually flying, before it flipped. Ann Ashworth and John Pollard, from Royal Torbay YC, in a borrowed RS400, seemed comfortable, but apparently were not. Paul Craft took a tumble in his Vareo, which later meant a trip to hospital with a damaged rib. Hugh McCann tried, in his inimitable style, to do the impossible in his Vareo and failed. The Enterprise, crewed by Sue Mortimer and Thomas Goodall, capsized several times until it was towed back to shore.
Triumphant and looking very much in control were Malcolm and Fiona Davies in their bright green Tasar. Fearless and in control most of the time, young Dan Craft in his Lasar Radial was the runner-up.

On Sunday the wind god became really serious.  A constant 30mph wind with gusts up to 37mph kept most of the sailors in bed and the racing abandoned.
