The dinghy racers at Coombe Cellars were undaunted by the forecast of a dark and stormy night on Saturday. Aa early morning start got the hardy souls afloat in relatively benign conditions, although everyone including the Teign Corinthian Race Officer kept a wary eye on the building wind from up river.
It was fairly typical that ex-Olympic Finn sailor, Paul Hiles, should set what was the standard Olympic course of a traingle and sausage.
Making an impressive visit to the Teign estuary were three RS boats from Torbay, who in usual rock star fashion gave a good demonstration of high tech sailing. However, it was a very traditional Firefly, crewed by Pete Cook and Janet Exelby from Salcombe, that took the honours in both the Handicap races on Saturday. Paul Craft was second in his RS Vareo and Paul Procter, of Paignton SC, third in a RS600 in the first race. In race two the runner-up was Chris Tilbrook in his Vortex followed by Craft.
The first Solo race was totally dominated by Peter Hearne, so much so that he seemed to be racing amongst the faster handicap boats. Second was Andy Colyer and third Charlie Tolcher. The second Solo race was controlled by Colyer followed by Nick Whyte making a welcome return after a long absence. James Stevenson made all the wrong moves, so did well to finish third.
Sunday was unbelievably pleasant with almost too much low sun.
The Firefly team found the conditions to their liking in the first race and collected another win ahead of Tilbrook. Third place went to an Enterprise from Dittisham, crewed by Sue Mortimer.  Tilbrook warmed to his task and won the second race, with the two Jamies, from the Royal Torbay YC in their RS800, in second place ahead of the Firefly.

A depleted Solo fleet saw Colyer win twice with Hearne second twice.

The Icebreaker series continues on Saturday 31 January and Sunday 1st Feb at 9.ooam both days.
